Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 might hit the shelves by the end of 2025. Alongside this exciting news, there's talk of a next-gen upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. According to GameReactor, sources "close to Rockstar" suggest that not only is a Switch 2 version of this Wild West epic in development, but a "next-gen upgrade patch" is also on the horizon to enhance gameplay on current-gen consoles.
While the details remain somewhat murky, GameReactor's insiders indicate that both the port and the upgrade could be available as early as later this year. This buzz is further supported by Nintenduo, which mentions that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 might launch within Take-Two's current fiscal year, ending March 31, 2026. It's still up in the air whether the game will be a digital-only release or if physical copies will also be available.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, we at IGN hailed it as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10. IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review praised it as "a game of rare quality; a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."
The prospect of Red Dead Redemption 2 arriving on the Switch 2 might not come as a shock. In a recent Q&A with investors following Take-Two's latest financial results, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform. He highlighted improved support for third-party publishers this time around, saying, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform." Zelnick added, "Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."

Specifically, Take-Two is set to bring Civilization 7 on June 5, coinciding with the launch day, alongside the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (though the specific games and release dates remain unclear), and Borderlands 4 on September 12. These titles are not surprising choices, given Take-Two's existing presence on the Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door might be open for more releases, particularly from Take-Two's back catalog. While GTA 6 might not make the cut, there's a glimmer of hope for GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2.
