Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Solo Path, Avoiding Avengers and X-Men

Author:Kristen Update:May 13,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast some doubt on the possibility of Deadpool joining the ranks of the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signal the end of the character's journey. In his own words to Time, Reynolds stated, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." This comes despite the massive success of "Deadpool & Wolverine," where the character's desire to join the Avengers was a central theme, leading many to speculate about a future crossover.

However, the recently announced cast for "Avengers: Doomsday" did not include Reynolds, although it did feature a heavy presence of X-Men veterans such as Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. This has sparked discussions about whether "Avengers: Doomsday" might actually be setting the stage for an Avengers vs. X-Men storyline. Notably, Channing Tatum, who portrayed Gambit in "Deadpool & Wolverine," is confirmed to be part of the "Doomsday" lineup.

While a formal inclusion in the Avengers or X-Men may not be on the cards for Deadpool, Reynolds hinted at the possibility of a surprise cameo in a supporting role, drawing parallels to Wesley Snipes' well-received appearance as Blade in "Deadpool & Wolverine." Looking ahead, Reynolds mentioned he's currently working on a new project involving an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped on the specifics. This could potentially lead to another Deadpool film that features a range of cameos, possibly including characters like Snipes' Blade, Tatum's Gambit, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23, all of whom appeared in "Deadpool & Wolverine."

As for "Avengers: Doomsday," details beyond the cast are still largely under wraps. Anthony Mackie, who will reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, expressed optimism about the film, promising it would recapture the classic Marvel vibe. Other cast members like Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) have also shared their excitement about the upcoming epic. A set photo leak this month stirred the MCU community, with some fearing it might spell trouble for the X-Men. Additionally, fans are buzzing with speculation that Oscar Isaac could appear as Moon Knight, especially after he withdrew from a Star Wars event due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige confirmed that the "Avengers: Doomsday" cast reveal was not exhaustive, hinting at more surprises to come.
