Sandworms Rideable in Dune: Awakening - Sort Of

Author:Kristen Update:Jun 11,2025

While sandworm-riding might not be the first survival priority on Arrakis, it’s definitely one of the most thrilling things to attempt in *Dune: Awakening*. Although it's far from easy — and often ends in spectacular failure — dedicated players have discovered that with enough patience, timing, and a bit of luck, you can actually ride a sandworm.

It’s important to note that this isn’t an official feature or unlockable ability. The developers at Funcom explored the idea during early design phases but ultimately decided against implementing it. However, that didn’t stop Redditor SgtDolphin from figuring out how to pull it off using a clever combination of movement skills and equipment.

In his now-viral Reddit posts, SgtDolphin shared two videos demonstrating successful sandworm rides. He utilized abilities like the Bindu Sprint for high-speed bursts, the Full Suspensor Belt to stabilize mid-air movements, and Emperor’s Wings to gain additional aerial control. Timing was crucial — players must anticipate the worm’s behavior like they’re preparing for a boss fight in *Elden Ring*.

"It's very glitchy at times, especially on the sand that's being displaced," SgtDolphin explained in the comments. "Many deaths from the worm to get these rides — it's a pretty dangerous sport!"

Once aboard, control is limited — expect frequent moments of unintentional flight — but the fact that it works at all is impressive. It’s a testament to player ingenuity and the open-ended mechanics of *Dune: Awakening*’s environment.

We're currently working on our full review of *Dune: Awakening*. While we're still forming our final verdict — particularly on the game’s combat mechanics — our reviewer noted: “After more than 35 hours I still feel like I’m fairly early into my Dune: Awakening adventure, and still have new zones to visit, haven’t gotten very far into the main story, and have only had a few encounters with PvP. There’s a ton for me to do, so look for an update sometime this week as I work my way through to the endgame.”
