Zach Braff Returns for Scrubs Reboot

Author:Kristen Update:Dec 30,2025

In television, cherished shows never truly fade away — and in a year witnessing revivals ranging from The Office to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the beloved 2000s medical comedy Scrubs joins the resurgence.

Twenty-four years after Zach Braff's character, rookie physician JD, first stepped into Sacred Heart Hospital, the actor has signed on to return for ABC's upcoming Scrubs revival. The project promises a blend of fresh faces and familiar favorites from the original cast.

This approach may sound familiar — ABC previously attempted a similar transition during Scrubs' short-lived ninth season, where Braff and core cast members passed the torch to a younger ensemble. The poorly received effort lasted only nine episodes.

Nearly two decades later, ABC is giving the concept another shot with original creator Bill Lawrence at the helm, developing a hybrid reboot-revival format.

Following Braff's casting confirmation, Entertainment Weekly reports other original cast members will likely join the project. Lawrence previously told Deadline, "We've had extensive discussions, and the compelling reasons to revisit this are twofold."

"First, audiences genuinely care about what became of these characters in the medical world — that emotional connection drives successful revivals. Second, the show's magic always came from watching idealistic young professionals navigate the realities of medicine as a true calling," Lawrence explained.
