Author:Kristen Update:Feb 06,2026

The Star Trek franchise brings William Shatner's iconic Captain James T. Kirk back to the spotlight in Star Trek: The Last Starship, an ambitious new comic book series. Following threads from Star Trek: Discovery, this storyline places Kirk at the helm during the Federation's most desperate crisis.

The series unfolds in the devastating aftermath of The Burn - a 31st century catastrophe that destroyed nearly all active warp cores across the galaxy, claiming trillions of lives. With the Federation collapsing into chaos and interstellar civilization teetering on the brink, a mysteriously restored Kirk must rally a new crew to preserve Starfleet's fading ideals.

Creative duties fall to writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing (fresh from IDW's Star Trek: Lore War), with visuals by series veteran Adrián Bonilla and colorist Heather Moore. The debut issue boasts variant covers from Francesco Francavilla, Skylar Patridge, Michael Cho, and Malachi Ward.

While Kirk famously perished in Star Trek Generations, Shatner himself revived the character through a series of non-canon "Shatnerverse" novels. The Last Starship intriguingly features Kirk restored to his prime Original Series appearance rather than his later-years incarnation.

"Forget conventional Star Trek expectations," Lanzing explains. "We're crafting literary, innovative sci-fi noir through Adrián's stunning artwork - equally rewarding for die-hard fans and newcomers alike. This is uncharted territory showcasing Trek's potential evolution."

"Kirk represents Starfleet's timeless ideals," Kelly adds. "William Shatner's legendary portrayal gives us endless layers to explore. Now we're thrusting this quintessential pioneer into situations that will challenge everything he stands for."

Star Trek: The Last Starship #1 launches September 24, 2025.
