Star Wars Hunters to Shut Down Nine Months After Launch, PC Version Canceled

Zynga, publisher of Star Wars Hunters, has announced the game's impending shutdown a mere nine months post-launch, with plans for a Steam PC version officially scrapped.

Developed by NaturalMotion, this free-to-play team battle arena game debuted on Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android in June 2024. IGN's Star Wars: Hunters review scored it 7/10, noting: "Star Wars: Hunters offers lighthearted PvP entertainment - enjoyable for short bursts, but lacking long-term staying power." This assessment proved accurate, as Zynga confirmed the final content update will arrive April 15, with servers staying online until October 1, 2025.

"We recognize this news may disappoint our players," Zynga stated. "This decision wasn't made lightly. Your passion and dedication have been invaluable, and we'll provide regular updates during the transition period."

Here's the shutdown timeline: On March 25, Season 5 will extend by three weeks with reruns of events and shop bundles. Players get additional time to achieve Kyber 1 rank in the prolonged Ranked Season. April 15 marks the final content update - introducing new Support Hunter Tuya as a free unlock - alongside the removal of in-game purchases. All battlefields and modes will remain playable during the extended live service period.

Notably absent from the announcement is the PC version, originally slated for Steam Early Access this year. The Steam store page now displays an "unavailable" notice. This represents a significant setback for parent company Take-Two, as Hunters marked Zynga's first console venture and was poised to be their PC debut.

"The strong performance on mobile and Switch prompted our PC expansion plans," Yaron Leyvan, Zynga's EVP of Games, had remarked in November 2023. "This milestone reflects our commitment to growing our playerbase across platforms."

Star Wars gaming fans can anticipate upcoming projects including Respawn's third Jedi installment and Bit Reactor's tactical title, both expected to debut at Star Wars Celebration 2025.
