The title of the upcoming sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie may have been revealed early due to an NBCUniversal press release slip.

Online reports highlighted an NBCUniversal press release for its Upfront Showcase, which listed Super Mario World among upcoming Universal Pictures and Illumination films set to stream on Peacock.

Universal quickly revised the press release, removing all references to Mario.

The original NBCUniversal press release mentioned “Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions.” Given that Shrek and Minions refer to Shrek 5 and Minions 3, it’s possible Super Mario World is a placeholder rather than the final title for the Mario sequel. Similarly, the next Shrek film isn’t just called Shrek, nor is the Minions film simply titled Minions.

Still, Super Mario World is a more distinct title than a generic Super Mario or Super Mario Bros., fueling speculation that it could be accurate. The name Super Mario World aligns well with a potential sequel to the Mario movie.
