Superman Takes Flight with Real-Face Effects

DC Studios co-head James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.

A new 30-second promotional video showcased scenes of Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during flight. The latter shot sparked discussion, with some viewers commenting on Superman's seemingly unnatural facial stillness while his hair and cape moved dynamically. Speculation included subpar CGI.

However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot utilized no CGI on Superman's face. He attributed the perceived anomaly to the close-up wide-angle lens used and confirmed the authenticity of both the Svalbard location (where filming took place) and David Corenswet's performance. The director suggests the expression is a genuine smirk from Corenswet, possibly influenced by wind or a fan.

Despite Gunn's explanation, debate continues, with comparisons drawn to the flying Adam Warlock sequence in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (also directed by Gunn). Nevertheless, excitement for the Superman film remains high. The film, launching DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, is slated for release on July 11, 2025.
