"Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Hints at Mouse Support"

Author:Kristen Update:May 29,2025

The rumored Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con controllers appear to have gained a significant upgrade, with mouse support now seemingly confirmed through a recently published patent. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released a document on February 6, 2025, detailing Nintendo's patent for the Joy-Con controllers of the upcoming Switch 2. This publication sheds light on several intriguing features that could redefine the gaming experience.

According to the patent, the Joy-Con controllers for Switch 2 will feature mouse-like functionality. This capability was hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer, where the Joy-Cons were shown being moved across surfaces, suggesting their potential use as mice. The patent describes how the sensors within the Joy-Con detect reflected light from a surface, enabling movement tracking when the controller is placed on a flat surface.

In addition to mouse support, the patent outlines a new charging dock capable of charging up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously. A magnetic attachment is also included, designed to connect the Joy-Cons to the console while featuring a wrist strap similar to those seen on the original Switch controllers. Furthermore, the patent introduces a new pair of controllers that split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor on the side. These controllers can function independently as mice or be combined into a standard controller using a separate attachment.

It’s important to note that these features, as detailed in the patent, may not reflect the final design of the Switch 2. Nintendo has yet to confirm any official details regarding the Joy-Con or other accessories for the console.

Nintendo enthusiasts can look forward to more information during the upcoming Nintendo Direct event, scheduled for April 2, 2025, at 6 AM PT and 9 AM ET. The event will stream live on all official Nintendo social media platforms. While the Switch 2 is expected to launch this year, no specific release date has been officially announced yet.
