Following months of speculation and leaks, Nintendo finally confirmed the existence of the Switch 2. A brief teaser trailer, released January 16th, showcased a refined design while maintaining the hybrid functionality of its predecessor.

The teaser highlighted a larger screen, a more robust kickstand, and magnetically attaching Joy-Cons – a significant change from the original Switch's rail system. An additional USB-C port was also confirmed.

Backward compatibility is a key feature. Nintendo stated that both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games will be playable, although some titles may have limited or no support. Specific unsupported titles will be detailed on the Nintendo website at a later date. Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions will remain valid on the Switch 2.

While no exclusive titles have been officially announced, the teaser hinted at a new Mario Kart installment (possibly Mario Kart 9), and recent reports suggest Gotham Knights may be a launch title. Registration opens January 17th, 2025, at 12:00 P.M. PT / 2:00 P.M. CT / 3:00 P.M. ET and closes January 26th, 2025, at 11:59 P.M. local time for each location. Selection is random, and a Nintendo Account is required.
