The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know

The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved live service game. Will their investment of time and money be rendered obsolete by a new iteration? This question remains largely unanswered, but recent comments from Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick offer some insight.

GTA Online's enduring popularity and profitability have been significant factors in Rockstar's decision to prioritize it over story DLC for GTA 5. However, the prospect of a new GTA Online (potentially GTA Online 2) raises concerns about the future of the current version. Will players be forced to abandon their progress and investments?

In a recent interview, Zelnick addressed this concern using the example of NBA 2K Online. Both NBA 2K Online (launched in 2012) and its sequel (2017) co-existed successfully, allowing players of the original to continue playing without being left behind. Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles." He highlighted the continued support for NBA 2K Online and its sequel, demonstrating a willingness to maintain legacy titles with active communities.

While Zelnick avoided directly addressing the future of GTA Online due to the lack of official announcements, his comments strongly suggest that a new GTA Online wouldn't necessarily mean the end of the original. Continued player engagement, he implied, would warrant continued support for the current GTA Online.

However, much remains unknown about GTA 6. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more details soon, especially considering the potential proximity to Borderlands 4's September release. Until then, the question of GTA Online's future remains a topic of speculation and anticipation.
