Pokémon is renowned for its family-friendly appeal, with its mainline games consistently receiving the "E for Everyone" rating, inviting kids of all ages to dive into its vibrant world. While beloved characters like Pikachu and Eevee often take center stage, some Pokémon carry darker undertones that might surprise many fans. Beneath the surface of this colorful universe, certain Pokédex entries and narratives delve into themes of kidnappings and even chilling tales of murder, adding a layer of horror to the franchise.
IGN has spotlighted what we believe are the five creepiest Pokédex entries, though the list could certainly be longer. Notable mentions include Mimikyu, a Pokémon so eerie it masquerades as Pikachu to make friends, all while plotting the downfall of the iconic mascot; Haunter, which stealthily follows humans through dark alleys, ultimately licking them to induce fatal convulsions; and Hypno, known for a disturbing storyline in the Pokémon children's show where it hypnotizes and abducts children to consume their dreams.
Answer See Results Drifloon --------It was finally Friday, and the young girl from Floaroma Town was beaming with excitement. She quickly ate her breakfast, eager to start her weekend of flower picking. This was her favorite time of year, and she couldn't wait for school to end so she could spend the next two days laughing and smiling with her parents. She sprinted to the Valley Windworks, known for its unique flowers, despite knowing it was risky to go without a Pokémon. But she considered it the safest, gentlest spot in Sinnoh.
Upon arrival, she was captivated by the vibrant pink, yellow, and red flowers, but her attention was quickly drawn to a shimmering purple balloon floating gracefully in the breeze. Enchanted, she grabbed its string, only to be surprised when the balloon turned to face her with a big yellow cross and two empty black eyes. It tugged gently, and the girl followed, laughing. As it pulled her further and higher, the string wrapped around her wrist. The balloon, known as Drifloon, found the child neither too heavy nor too rough and continued to pull her higher until she was never seen again.
Drifloon, the Balloon Pokémon, introduces a sinister twist to the innocent joy of balloons, reminiscent of the horror in the "IT" franchise. While some of its Pokédex entries are relatively harmless, mentioning it as "a Pokémon formed by the spirits of people and Pokémon," others are far more ominous. Entries warn that "it tugs on the hands of children to steal them away," and "any child who mistakes Drifloon for a balloon and holds on to it could wind up missing." Another chilling entry states, "its round body is stuffed with souls and expands each time it leads someone away." Drifloon's appearances in the games, specifically on Fridays at the Valley Windworks in Diamond and Pearl, add an element of mystery, turning it into a haunting presence.
The boy's parents were increasingly worried as his condition deteriorated. His temperature spiked, his skin turned grey, and his speech became incoherent. Despite the efforts of the best doctors from Mauville and Slateport, his health continued to decline. In a moment of fleeting clarity, the boy whispered, "My doll." Desperate, his parents brought him toy after toy from his collection, but he rejected each one, including a Pikachu, Lotad, Skitty, and Treecko, with what little strength he had left.
Confused, his parents searched everywhere and finally found a faded, ragged doll with glowing red eyes and a golden zipper for a mouth under the bed. The mother recognized it as the doll she had thrown away years ago when they bought him the latest Poké Doll collection from Lilycove. Covered in sharp pins, the doll seemed to stare back at her. As the boy reached for it, the doll leaped from her hands and out the window. To their astonishment, the boy's condition seemed to improve slightly.
Even in its family-friendly games, Pokémon isn't shy about incorporating classic horror elements. Banette, the Marionette Pokémon, embodies the spirit of dolls like Annabelle or Chucky, with a backstory reminiscent of Jessie from Toy Story 2, but with a vengeful twist. Its Pokédex entries reveal a haunting tale: "A doll that became a Pokémon over its grudge from being junked. It seeks the child that disowned it." Another entry states, "This Pokémon developed from an abandoned doll that amassed a grudge. It is seen in dark alleys." A more direct entry warns, "It’s a stuffed toy that was thrown away and became possessed, ever searching for the one who threw it away so it can exact its revenge." Banette inflicts harm by sticking pins in itself, causing pain to the child it seeks. Only by unzipping its wide smile or showing it love again can its negative energy be dispelled.
On a beautiful summer day, the residents of Melemele Island enjoyed Big Wave Beach. Some surfed, others sunbathed, and children built sandcastles. As the sun began to set, most kids went home, but one boy remained, determined to finish his grand sandcastle. The beach was nearly empty, and the boy was so focused he didn't notice the movement behind him.
The other sandcastles began to shift, taking on unnatural forms. Their shadows grew against the sunset, enveloping the boy as he turned to see a Pokémon resembling a sandcastle with a gaping mouth and soulless eyes. Assuming it was friendly, he reached for a red spade stuck in its head, but the Pokémon swallowed his hand. The boy screamed and tried to pull away, but his entire arm was consumed, and like quicksand, his body was slowly absorbed.
Contrary to the joyful image of sandcastles, Sandygast harbors a sinister nature. One Pokédex entry advises, "If you build sand mounds when you’re playing, destroy them before you go home, or they may get possessed and become Sandygast." Another entry reveals, "Sandygast mainly inhabits beaches. It takes control of anyone who puts their hand into its mouth, forcing them to make its body bigger." The true horror unfolds when Sandygast evolves into Palossand, known as the "Beach Nightmare," which "pulls its prey down into the sand by controlling the sand itself, and then it sucks out their souls." Another entry confirms, "Buried beneath the castle are masses of dried-up bones from those whose vitality it has drained," highlighting the grim reality of Sandygast and Palossand's growth.
The busy season had ended, and the old woman relished her morning swim in the peaceful waters of Undella Town. She preferred the town without tourists, even if the water was cooler. Having swum from these shores for 70 years, she wasn't about to stop now. The waves were choppy, but she swam with vigor, not noticing the current pulling her further out. When she finally turned to see the distant shore, her heart rate quickened. She tried to swim back but needed frequent breaks, lamenting her aging body.
As she struggled, a Pokémon appeared from the water, inches from her face. Initially cautious, she assumed it wanted to help as it moved closer. She wrapped her hands around it, and it did the same. The Pokémon kept her in place, allowing her to rest. Grateful, she thanked the creature and tried to swim the remaining distance, but she couldn't move. Paralyzed, she watched as the Pokémon, with distant eyes, began to submerge, dragging her to the depths.
Frillish, the Floating Pokémon, hides a deadly nature behind its simple appearance. Its design taps into the common fear of the unknown depths of the ocean. It lives in a den far below the waves but surfaces to hunt. One Pokédex entry describes, "With its thin, veil-like arms wrapped around the body of its opponent, it sinks to the ocean floor." Another chilling entry reveals, "Its thin, veil-like arms have tens of thousands of poisonous stingers. They paralyze prey with poison, then drag them down to their lairs, five miles below the surface." Frillish's victims are likely still conscious as they are pulled under, fully aware of their impending doom.
He shouldn't have ventured out. The mountain was hard to navigate at night, and a blizzard made it nearly impossible. Yet, he heard a knock at his door and a woman's cry for help. Living alone at such a high altitude, he knew someone must be in trouble. He donned his gear and set out to search, but the blizzard disoriented him, leaving him lost.
Relieved to find a small cave entrance, he sought refuge inside, though it was still freezing. He lit a lantern and examined his surroundings, noticing the cave walls covered in thick ice. As he looked closer, he realized the ice preserved not just the cold but also bodies, including one that resembled him. Panic set in as he saw several more figures trapped within the ice. As he turned to flee, an icy Pokémon floated before him. It exhaled a frozen breath, and as he backed away, his body stiffened until he became another frozen decoration in the monster's lair.
Froslass combines elements of the Japanese Yōkai Yuki-onna and the Greek Medusa. Its Pokédex entries are chilling: "The soul of a woman lost on a snowy mountain possessed an icicle, becoming this Pokémon. The food it most relishes is the souls of men." Another entry states, "It freezes hikers who have come to climb snowy mountains and carries them back to its home. It only goes after men it thinks are handsome." Froslass lures or drags its victims to its den during blizzards, where they are "neatly lined up" as "decorations," adding a hauntingly beautiful yet terrifying element to its lore.
