Top Pokémon Card Gainers and Losers: May 9 Week

Author:Kristen Update:May 12,2025

Another week brings more excitement and volatility to the Pokémon single card market as trainers eagerly await the release of Destined Rivals. Fortunately, the preorders for Black Bolt and White Flare at the Pokémon Center managed to dodge a bot takeover this time around.

The most significant price drop this week was for Greninja ex 214/167, which has plummeted by nearly half its value since the start of the year. We're also witnessing notable price reductions across the Obsidian Flames and the elusive 151 expansions. On the flip side, Dragonite V from Evolving Skies has nearly doubled in value since January, a testament to its stunning artwork that has always been undervalued.

Charizard V Alt Art continues to impress with its dynamic depiction of a battle against Venusaur, steadily climbing in value. Meanwhile, Rayquaza VMAX Alt Art is soaring, gaining an additional $100 in value since the beginning of the year. Let's delve into the week's biggest climbers and crashers in the Pokémon TCG market.

While Sword and Shield era Pokémon cards are finally seeing a noticeable climb, Scarlet and Violet series cards are settling back into more reasonable prices.

Alakazam ex SIR from 151 is a stunning card, now 34% lower in price than at the beginning of March. It's a must-have for any collection, especially with its connection to Uri Geller's grandfather.

Bulbasaur was my first starter Pokémon in Pokémon Blue, so the Bulbasaur IR holds a special place in my heart. It has dropped by a massive 52% since mid-March, making it an affordable and beautiful addition to any collection.

Moving to Obsidian Flames, Ninetales IR has always been one of the set's highlights. With a 40% price drop since February, it's now available for a reasonable $18.17.

Despite any criticism of Obsidian Flames, the Charizard ex SIR is undeniably cool with its stained glass Tera form. It hasn't dropped much since March, but every dollar saved counts.

The biggest crasher this month is Greninja ex SIR, which was once poised to be the most expensive Scarlet and Violet era card. However, Prismatic Evolutions shifted the market dynamics. It's still a fantastic card holding steady at $275, a far cry from its $411.62 price tag at the end of February.

Pokémon Card Climbers

Turning to this week's climbers, Rayquaza VMAX alt art remains a coveted card from the Sword and Shield era. Already valued at over $500, it's now at $649.99 and shows no signs of slowing down. It could potentially reach $1,000 in a few years, so it's a wise investment if you can afford it.

Charizard V Alt Art captures the essence of a battle with Venusaur, showcasing dynamic movement that sets it apart from many static Pokémon cards. It has gained $40 since January and could easily surpass $200 before the year ends.
