How Starbrand Works in Marvel Snap

Starbrand is a 3-cost, 10-power card with an ongoing ability that reads: “Ongoing: Your opponent has +3 Power at each other location.” Unlike Mister Fantastic, whose effect is limited to adjacent locations, Starbrand's power boost affects all locations except the one he is in. To counteract this drawback, decks featuring Starbrand often include cards like Zero, Sauron, and Enchantress to mitigate his negative effect.

While Starbrand can be hard countered by Shang-Chi, he synergizes well with cards like Surtur. However, his 3-cost slot makes him a bit tricky to integrate into many decks, where you might prefer to play Surtur or Sauron instead.

Starbrand fits well into two established deck archetypes: Shuri Sauron and Surtur. Although Shuri Sauron has fallen out of the meta, Starbrand could potentially bring it back to life. Here’s a look at the decks:

Shuri Sauron Deck:

  • Zabu
  • Zero
  • Armor
  • Lizard
  • Sauron
  • Starbrand
  • Shuri
  • Ares
  • Enchantress
  • Typhoid Mary
  • Red Skull
  • Taskmaster

This deck is budget-friendly, with Ares being the only Series 5 card, which can be replaced by Vision if needed. The strategy revolves around using Zero, Sauron, and Enchantress to neutralize the negative effects of your Ongoing cards, then buffing another lane with Shuri into a card like Red Skull, and finally using Taskmaster to copy the massive power. Traditionally, this deck used Ebony Maw instead of Zabu, but with Taskmaster's cost increase to 6, Zabu provides more flexibility to play Shuri alongside Starbrand or Ares in the final turns. Starbrand’s +3 power to your opponent’s locations isn’t as detrimental when going tall with Shuri, and you can cancel it out with Enchantress.

Surtur Deck:

  • Zabu
  • Zero
  • Armor
  • Sam Wilson
  • Captain America
  • Cosmo
  • Surtur
  • Starbrand
  • Ares
  • Attuma
  • Crossbones
  • Cull Obsidian
  • Skaar

This deck is more costly, featuring four Series 5 cards. The synergy between Sam Wilson and Cull Obsidian, combined with Surtur and Ares, makes it highly effective. With Starbrand, you can reduce Skaar to a 1-cost card by playing Starbrand into two of Ares, Attuma, and Crossbones on turns 4 and 5. Zero helps mitigate the downsides of Starbrand and Attuma, though it's not essential to play him first. The challenge is timing Starbrand’s play, ideally after Surtur and perhaps on the final turn alongside Zero and Skaar.

Should You Use Spotlight Cache Keys or Collector’s Tokens on Starbrand?

Starbrand is a “wait and see” card due to recent meta shifts with the introduction of powerful cards like Agamotto and Eson. It’s unclear whether Shuri Sauron can remain competitive, and the viability of Surtur decks is also uncertain after recent nerfs to Aero and Skaar. If you have the resources, it might be wise to wait a few days to see how Starbrand performs in the evolving meta before investing.
