Ubisoft's F2P Shooter Defiant Ceases Operations

Ubisoft's free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, is officially shutting down its servers in June 2025. This article details the closure and its impact on players.

The "Sunset" Begins

Ubisoft will cease XDefiant operations on June 3rd, 2025. The shutdown process starts December 3rd, 2024, preventing new players from accessing the game or purchasing content. Refunds are planned for eligible in-game purchases.

Ubisoft states: "Those who purchased the Ultimate Founders Pack will receive a full refund. Refunds for VC and DLC purchases made since November 3rd, 2024, will also be issued. Processing may take up to 8 weeks."

Players should receive refunds by January 28th, 2025. Contact Ubisoft for assistance if a refund isn't received by then. Note that only the Ultimate Founder's Pack is eligible for a full refund.

Why the Shutdown?

Marie-Sophie Waubert, Ubisoft's Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, explained that XDefiant failed to meet player retention targets in the competitive free-to-play market. The game's performance didn't justify further investment.

Studio Closures and Team Transitions

Approximately half of XDefiant's team will transition to other roles within Ubisoft. However, the San Francisco and Osaka studios will close, and the Sydney studio will downsize, resulting in significant job losses (143 in San Francisco and 134 anticipated in Osaka and Sydney). This follows previous layoffs in August 2024 across various American Ubisoft studios.

A Positive Reflection

Despite initially exceeding 5 million users and reaching 15 million players overall, XDefiant's long-term performance fell short of Ubisoft's expectations. Executive Producer Mark Rubin acknowledged the challenges of the free-to-play market and expressed gratitude for the positive player interactions.

Season 3 Release and Early Reports

While the game is closing, Season 3 will launch as planned, potentially featuring Assassin's Creed content. However, only players who acquired the game before December 3rd, 2024, will experience this final season. Insider Gaming's earlier report of the game's struggles, initially denied by Rubin, proved accurate. The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 likely impacted XDefiant's player base.
