Nonograms, also known as Hanjie, Griddlers, Picross, Japanese Crosswords, Japanese Puzzles, Pic-a-Pix, "Paint by numbers," and other names, are picture logic puzzles where cells in a grid must be colored or left blank according to numbers at the side of the grid to reveal a hidden picture. These numbers represent a form of discrete tomography, indicating the count of unbroken lines of filled-in squares in any given row or column. For example, a clue of "4 8 3" means there are sets of four, eight, and three filled squares, in that order, with at least one blank square between successive groups.

Solving a Nonogram requires determining which cells will be boxes and which will be left empty. Marking cells as spaces is just as crucial as filling them as boxes. These spaces help in later stages to determine where a clue's block of boxes and its corresponding number in the legend may extend. Solvers typically use a dot or a cross to mark cells they are sure are spaces.

It's vital to solve Nonograms without guessing. Only cells determined by logic should be filled, as a single incorrect guess can spread errors across the entire puzzle and ruin the solution.
