Tichu: A Multi-Genre Card Game
Tichu is an engaging partnership card game that blends elements from Bridge, Daihinmin, and Poker. Played in teams of two, with partners sitting opposite each other, the game challenges players to work together to accumulate points and gain strategic advantage. The objective is to be the first team to reach a predetermined point target through multiple hands of play.
Game Components
The Tichu deck features 56 cards across four suits: Jade, Swords, Pagodas, and Stars. Each suit contains 13 cards ranging from 2 to Ace, plus four special cards: the Dragon, Phoenix, Dog, and Mah Jong.
Gameplay Overview
Each player receives eight initial cards, with the option to declare "Grand Tichu" - a bold 200-point wager that they'll be first to play all their cards. After this initial phase, six more cards are dealt to each player. Before playing their first card, players may call "Tichu" (a 100-point version of the same wager).
Card Exchange
After all 56 cards are dealt (14 per player), participants exchange cards face-down - passing three cards total (one to each opponent and partner) while receiving three in return.
Trick Play
The Mah Jong holder leads the first trick, playing any valid combination. Subsequent players must either play a higher combination of the same type (exception: Bombs) or pass. The last player to play a valid combination collects the trick and leads the next play.
Scoring & Winning
The round concludes when teammates clear their hands. If one player remains with cards, they suffer penalties. The game ends when a team reaches the preset point target.
