Phỏm Ta La - Tien Len Online: A Popular Vietnamese Card Game

Phỏm (also known as Ta La or Tu Lo Kho) is a beloved card game in Vietnam, particularly popular in the northern regions. "Ta La" is the Southern term, while "Phỏm" is used in the North. The game involves strategic card collection and discarding to create sets ("Phom") while minimizing the points of remaining unmatched cards. Played with a standard 52-card deck, its varied gameplay makes it a favorite for family gatherings and celebrations.

Key Terms:

• Phom: Sets of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, or three or more cards of the same rank.
• Junk Cards: Unmatched cards not part of a Phom.
• Ù (Hu): A player with three Phoms (no junk cards) wins immediately.
• Stomach (or Stock): The remaining undealt cards.
• Mom: A player unable to form any Phoms at the end of the game.
• Take the Pin: Taking an opponent's discarded card in the final round.
• Send: In the final round, discarding a card that can be added to an opponent's Phom (this card doesn't count against the player).
• Compensation: A player who takes a pin and is subsequently beaten by a Ù player must pay a penalty. Three consecutive cards also trigger compensation.
• Re: If a player discards and another player then plays, the discarded cards are returned, and the original player gets an extra turn.

Gameplay:

• Players: 2-4 players. The dealer (or previous round winner) starts with 10 cards; others receive 9. Remaining cards form the stock.
• Turns: Play proceeds counter-clockwise, starting with the dealer.
• Card Play: The first player discards a card. Subsequent players can either claim the discarded card to complete a Phom or draw from the stock. After claiming/drawing, a player then discards a card.
• Game End: The game ends when a player achieves Ù, or after four rounds if no one achieves Ù. In the latter case, the winner is determined by the lowest junk card point total.
• Final Round: Players must complete their Phoms, "send" eligible cards, and then discard their final card. Remaining junk cards are scored.

Scoring (when no player achieves Ù):

• Lowest score wins.
• Card Values: A, J, Q, K count as 1, 11, 12, 13 respectively; other cards are face value.
• Tiebreakers: In case of ties, the player who discarded their cards first wins.
• Final Score Calculation:
  • 1st place: +6 points
  • 2nd place: -1 point
  • 3rd place: -2 points
  • 4th place: -3 points
  • Player taking a pin: -4 points
  • Player whose pin was taken: +4 points
  • Player achieving Ù: +15 points (other players lose 5 points each)
  • Player with no Phoms (Mom): loses 4 points to the winner.
