Blackjack

Blackjack stands as the most widely played table game in casinos.

Introduction

Blackjack is the most popular casino table game, found at almost every online casino. Its low house edge and favorable variance make it an excellent option for meeting wagering requirements when bonuses permit.

Rules and Play

In blackjack, hands are scored by totaling the values of the cards. For instance, a hand with a 4, 5, and 6 is worth 4+5+6=15. Face cards are each valued at 10. Aces can count as 1 or 11, so an ace and a 7 could be 8 or 18. The goal is to achieve the highest total without exceeding 21. A total over 21 results in a bust, causing the player to lose their bet regardless of the dealer's hand. A two-card 21 is a "blackjack," the highest-ranking hand, which pays a 3:2 bonus, while other winning hands pay 1:1.

After placing a bet, both the player and dealer receive two cards, with one dealer card face-up. Standard rules require the dealer to check for a blackjack if showing an ace or 10-value card. Players can buy insurance—paying 2:1 if the dealer has a blackjack—when the dealer shows an ace. However, insurance carries a house edge of 2-15% in single-hand games, making it generally unfavorable unless the deck is rich in 10-value cards, such as in specific multi-hand scenarios or when card counting. See the insurance exceptions page for details. If the dealer has a blackjack, the hand ends; otherwise, the player chooses from these options:

Stand — Keep the current cards and end the hand.

Hit — Draw another card, continuing until reaching 21 or busting.

Double — Double the bet and receive one more card, ending the hand. This is only allowed on a two-card hand, with no further hits.

Split — With two cards of equal value, split them into separate hands, doubling the bet. Each hand receives an additional card. Splitting aces ends after the second card; other pairs allow hitting, standing, or doubling, with possible re-splits.

Strategy

Despite the complex rules, blackjack strategy is straightforward. Players decide whether to hit, stand, double, or split based on their hand and the dealer's upcard. Optimal play reduces the house edge significantly. Key strategies include always splitting aces and 8s, doubling down on 11 against a dealer's low card, and standing on hard 17 or higher. Following basic strategy charts helps maximize winning chances.
