Tarneeb, a popular card game known throughout Arab countries and particularly in the Levant, is also referred to as "rule" in the Arab Gulf states. The main goal of Tarneeb is to win consecutive rounds, or "Tarneeb groups." It is played with four players divided into two teams, with each pair sitting opposite each other. The game continues through several rounds until one team emerges as the winner.
Tarneeb is played using a standard 52-card deck, excluding jokers. The game begins with the player to the left of the dealer making the first bid. Each of the four players then bids in turn, starting with the player to the right of the dealer. The highest bidder gets to choose the Tarneeb suit.
The bidding starts at 7 and can go up to 13, also known as "Cabot" or "livers." If a player cannot meet their bid, they face a penalty. For example, if a player bids 10 but only wins 9 tricks, they lose points equivalent to the difference between their bid and the tricks won (in this case, 1 point), while the opposing team gains points for the tricks they won (for example, 4 points if they won 4 tricks). If the other team wins 5 tricks, the bid is considered a failure, and penalties are applied.
The game concludes when one of the teams reaches a predetermined score, either 61 or 31 points, as agreed upon before starting the game.
The card hierarchy in Tarneeb is as follows: Ace (Cut), King (Sheikh), Queen (girl), Jack (born), followed by the numbers 10 down to 2.
