Dan Gilroy, conocido por escribir y dirigir Nightcrawler , tomará las riendas al escribir la película, basándose en un borrador inicial escrito por Top Gun: el guionista Maverick Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy ha participado recientemente en la escritura de múltiples episodios de la serie Star Wars Andor , creada por su hermano, Tony Gilroy.

La serie original de Miami Vice , creada por Anthony Yerkovich y producida por Michael Mann, se emitió en NBC de 1984 a 1989 en cinco temporadas. Protagonizada por Don Johnson y Philip Michael Thomas como detectives Crockett y Tubbs, la serie revolucionó la televisión con su innovador estilo, sonido y estética visual.
