Author:Kristen Update:May 13,2025

Joseph Kosinski, acclaimed director of Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is reportedly set to helm a new adaptation of the iconic series Miami Vice for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dan Gilroy, known for writing and directing Nightcrawler, will take the reins on scripting the film, building on an initial draft penned by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy has recently been involved in writing multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor, which was created by his brother, Tony Gilroy.

The original Miami Vice series, created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, aired on NBC from 1984 to 1989 across five seasons. Starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as detectives Crockett and Tubbs, the series revolutionized television with its groundbreaking style, sound, and visual aesthetics.

A previous film adaptation of Miami Vice was released in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the lead roles.

PlayWhile specifics about the new film are scarce, it's confirmed that *Miami Vice* won't be Kosinski's immediate follow-up to his upcoming film *F1*, set to release this June. This timeline should afford Kosinski ample opportunity to delve into the project and, perhaps, choose the perfect Ferrari for the film.
