Cyberpunk 2 in Pre-Production at CD Projekt

CD Projekt has officially announced that Cyberpunk 2, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, is now in pre-production.

The studio shared the news alongside its latest financial results, revealing that the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 has sold an impressive 10 million copies.

Currently, 96 out of CD Projekt's 730 developers are dedicated to Cyberpunk 2, with the majority (422) focused on The Witcher 4.

While both Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4 still appear distant, fans now have confirmation of the sequel's official name—previously known under its codename "Orion."

Details about Cyberpunk 2 remain scarce, but creator Mike Pondsmith recently hinted at new information during Digital Dragons 2025. Pondsmith, who collaborated closely with CD Projekt on the 30 million-selling Cyberpunk 2077, confirmed his advisory role—reviewing scripts and visiting the studio to provide feedback.

"Last week I explored different departments," Pondsmith recalled. "They'd show me prototypes—'Check out this new cyberware'—and I'd give my input on what worked."

He dropped a major tease: the sequel will introduce an entirely new city alongside Night City, describing it as "Chicago gone wrong." While not necessarily a futuristic Chicago, this setting evokes similar dystopian vibes.

The environment team showcased their vision for this location to Pondsmith. "Night City remains, but there's another metropolis—I won't spoil more. The aesthetic isn't Blade Runner-esque; it's grittier, like a corrupted Chicago," he explained.

Speculation continues about whether Cyberpunk 2 will expand Night City or rebuild it entirely. While details are sparse, players might explore two fully realized cities.
