DeepSeek, a prominent Chinese startup, has made waves in the AI industry with its innovative chatbot. The company's introduction to the market has even contributed to one of the largest drops in NVIDIA's stock price, showcasing its significant impact. DeepSeek's AI model is distinguished by its unique architecture and training methods, including Multi-token Prediction (MTP), Mixture of Experts (MoE), and Multi-head Latent Attention (MLA). These technologies enhance the model's accuracy, efficiency, and ability to capture crucial nuances in data.

Despite DeepSeek's claim of spending only $6 million on training their powerful DeepSeek V3 model, analysts have uncovered a more extensive investment. The company operates a vast computational infrastructure with around 50,000 Nvidia Hopper GPUs, costing approximately $1.6 billion in servers and $944 million in operational expenses. DeepSeek, a subsidiary of the Chinese hedge fund High-Flyer, owns its data centers, which provides them with full control over AI model optimization and faster innovation implementation.

DeepSeek's self-funded status and compact structure enable agile decision-making and effective implementation of AI innovations. The company has invested over $500 million in AI development since its inception. While DeepSeek's claim of a "revolutionary budget" may be exaggerated, their total costs are still significantly lower than those of competitors. For example, DeepSeek spent $5 million on their R1 model, whereas ChatGPT4o's training cost $100 million.

DeepSeek's success highlights the potential of well-funded, independent AI companies to compete with industry giants. Their achievements are attributed to substantial investments, technical breakthroughs, and a talented team, even if their budget claims are somewhat overstated.
