George R. R. Martin, the mastermind behind the intricate world of *Game of Thrones*, has once again teased the possibility of an *Elden Ring* movie. As the creative force behind the lore and history of FromSoftware's critically acclaimed game, which became one of the best-selling titles of 2022, Martin's involvement was prominently featured in the game's promotional efforts and credits, alongside FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki.
During IGN Fan Fest 2025, when asked about his potential involvement in a sequel to *Elden Ring*, Martin cleverly sidestepped the question but hinted at a cinematic adaptation. "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of *Elden Ring*," he revealed. This isn't the first time Martin has dropped such hints, and FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has also expressed openness to an adaptation, provided a "very strong partner" is involved.
However, Martin acknowledged a significant obstacle to his deep involvement in any *Elden Ring* movie project: his ongoing work on *The Winds of Winter*, the long-awaited sixth book in his *A Song of Ice and Fire* series. "We'll see if that [the *Elden Ring* movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know," he said. "I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
The wait for *The Winds of Winter* has been agonizing for fans, with the last book, *A Dance With Dragons*, released in 2011—the same year HBO's *Game of Thrones* premiered, bringing even more attention to Martin's fantasy universe. Martin himself has admitted to being 13 years late on the book, expressing both frustration and determination. "But that's still a priority," he emphasized. "A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] 'Oh, he’ll never be finished.' Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”
Martin's contribution to *Elden Ring* was primarily in worldbuilding, a task he relished. He explained to IGN how he helped FromSoftware craft the game's backstory, detailing the events and magic that shaped the world thousands of years before the game's present. "It was interesting that the team flew in and we had a number of sessions and they would fly back and do their magic, and then they would come back here a couple months later and show me what they had, which was always amazing to see what they came up with," he shared.
When asked if all his written material was used in the game, Martin noted that there's often more to a world than what appears on screen. "Yeah, I think especially when you're world building, there's always more that you actually see on the screen," he said, drawing parallels to other epic fantasies like Tolkien's works, which have extensive backstories.
