As a longtime admirer of thatgamecompany's Sky, I've always been drawn to its breathtaking art direction, immersive storytelling, and emotional depth—qualities that often shine brighter than its gameplay mechanics. Now, the developers are pushing boundaries further with Sky: Children of the Light's inaugural in-game animated film titled The Two Embers.
Marking a major milestone for thatgamecompany, The Two Embers: Part One will premiere as a limited in-game event starting July 21st. This silent animated feature delves into Sky's origin story, told purely through evocative visuals and an emotional score—no dialogue needed.
Presented in two parts, the first installment follows two seemingly disconnected children whose fates intertwine across time. The narrative begins with a lonely orphan dwelling in the crumbling outskirts of The Ruler's City—once prosperous, now decaying. When the child discovers an injured baby manatee, their shared journey explores profound themes of loss, isolation, and the transformative power of small kindnesses.
High above the disintegrating kingdom, the all-seeing Ruler observes as ominous storm clouds gather. Through masterful animation and stirring music, players will viscerally experience the child's sorrow while the manatee's presence offers fleeting moments of hope.
Sky: Children of the Light has released the first official preview of The Two Embers: Part One. Watch the teaser below:
The film will unfold weekly within Sky Cinema, a purpose-built in-game theater. Each chapter unlocks accompanying gameplay content, allowing players to explore narrative threads through interactive experiences—a brilliant fusion of cinema and gaming.
Rather than traditional distribution, thatgamecompany embeds this cinematic experience within Sky's universe—a visionary decision that elevates the game beyond conventional boundaries. This ambitious project, following the wildly successful Aurora concert, positions Sky as a groundbreaking platform for immersive storytelling.
Produced by Light & Realm in collaboration with thatgamecompany, with co-production by Illusorium Studios and Orchid, The Two Embers represents the studio's most daring transmedia venture to date. Don't miss this revolutionary experience—download Sky: Children of the Light on Google Play today.
