Ghost Recon Next Enters Alpha Testing Phase

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 01,2026

The next major installment in the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series is advancing to internal alpha testing in the coming months.

This update comes from Insider Gaming, which reported that the upcoming shooter, known internally under the codename 'Over,' will enter alpha testing this Fall (Q3). Given an anticipated testing phase of approximately 12 months, Insider Gaming projects a potential Fall 2026 release for the new Ghost Recon title.

Rumors regarding a new Ghost Recon game first emerged when the developer and publisher confirmed it was halting all new content development for 2019's Ghost Recon Breakpoint. The new title has reportedly been in development at Ubisoft since that time, though it was initially evident the franchise was undergoing a comprehensive reboot, which would naturally lead to a longer development period.

In a statement provided to IGN, a Ubisoft representative stated: "We do not comment on rumour or speculation."

IGN's review of Ghost Recon Breakpoint awarded it a 6/10. Our assessment noted: "Breakpoint provides initial entertainment by adhering closely to Ubisoft's established open-world formula, but a lack of mission diversity and conflicting design elements ultimately leave it lacking a distinct identity."

Earlier this year, Ubisoft established a new subsidiary dedicated to its Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six franchises, supported by a €1.16 billion (approximately $1.25 billion) investment from the Chinese tech giant Tencent.

This development closely followed the launch of Assassin's Creed Shadows, which has recently surpassed 3 million players. Prior to the release of Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft encountered a series of notable commercial failures, employee layoffs, studio shutdowns, and project cancellations, placing significant pressure on the company to deliver a hit after its stock price reached a historic low.

In 2022, Ubisoft discontinued development on Ghost Recon Frontline, a year after its initial announcement. The game was intended to be a free-to-play battle royale spin-off supporting 102 players but ultimately never launched.
