If you're a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, you might recall the buzz surrounding a modder known as "Dark Space," who crafted a playable recreation of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5. Using leaked coordinate data and official trailer visuals, Dark Space offered fans an early glimpse into what the upcoming game might look like. This mod became a sensation among eager gamers, desperate for a taste of what GTA 6 could offer ahead of its release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S later this year.

However, the project met an abrupt end after YouTube sent a takedown notice at the request of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games' parent company. Dark Space had shared gameplay footage and downloadable content on his YouTube channel, which eventually caught the attention of legal teams. In response to the strike, he promptly removed all download links to the mod and expressed frustration in a follow-up video, suggesting that the mod’s accuracy may have spoiled too much of GTA 6's anticipated map design.

In an interview with IGN, Dark Space revealed that he anticipated this outcome due to Take-Two’s history of enforcing strict copyright policies. He emphasized that his work likely competed with the surprise factor of the official release, a concern shared by many developers when fan creations venture too close to the original vision.

As a result, the entire mod project has been shelved indefinitely. Dark Space has decided to shift his focus away from GTA-related mods, citing the risks involved. Concerns are now growing over whether the GTA 6 community mapping project will face similar consequences.

Take-Two has a well-documented track record of removing fan-made content, including the recent takedown of the 'GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition' project. Former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij weighed in, arguing that such actions are part of the company’s efforts to protect its intellectual property and commercial interests.

While fans await the official launch of GTA 6, IGN continues to cover related developments, including speculation on potential delays, the future of GTA Online, and technical considerations like frame rates on next-gen consoles.
