GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges with Trailer 2 Release: 'Information Overload'

Author:Kristen Update:May 27,2025

The long-awaited GTA 6 mapping project has shifted into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its key contributors, Garza, telling IGN that "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The GTA 6 Mapping Discord, home to 370 members (soon to exceed 400), is abuzz as enthusiasts dive into the new details unveiled in Trailer 2.

"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," Garza, who manages the Discord server, shared with IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started."

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord project was born in the wake of the massive September 2022 leaks, which some fans speculate were humorously nodded to by Rockstar at the beginning of Trailer 2. Prior to Trailer 2, the project relied on those leaks and the initial Trailer 1 from December 2023 to piece together an accurate map of GTA 6.

The latest map iteration, released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, is now outdated thanks to the wealth of new information provided by Trailer 2. This fresh data is set to enhance the accuracy and detail of the community's mapping efforts.

In addition to plot details, characters, and 70 new screenshots, Rockstar has provided insights into the explorable areas within the state of Leonida, which is GTA 6's interpretation of Florida. Confirmed locations from this week's reveal include Vice City (GTA 6's version of Miami), the tropical archipelago known as Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a national landmark near the state's northern border.

Volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of all depicted elements, aiming to correlate fictional spaces with their real-world inspirations. This meticulous work will contribute to an updated map, which fans eagerly anticipate as a detailed preview of what GTA 6 will offer upon its release in May 2026.

Should Rockstar release additional assets or gameplay footage before the launch, the volunteers are prepared to refine their efforts further. The true test of their accuracy will come only when GTA 6 is released, allowing a direct comparison between the fan-created map and the actual game.

However, looming over the project is the risk of intervention by Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar. In March, a modder who created a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 was forced to abandon the project after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. This mod was based on the GTA 6 mapping project.

When asked last year about the possibility of legal action from Take-Two, Garza expressed "some mild concern." He noted, "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."

While we await the outcome, stay tuned for more updates on GTA 6, including all the details we've discovered so far and all the GTA 6 fan theories emerging from Trailer 2 itself.
