A New Game Inspired by FFVI

Following the success of Fantasian Neo Dimension, released in 2021 and subsequently ported to multiple platforms in 2024, Sakaguchi revealed his intention to develop a game acting as a successor to Final Fantasy VI. He described the upcoming project as "part two of my farewell note," indicating a personal significance beyond mere commercial endeavor. The project will reunite the team behind Fantasian, aiming for a blend of classic and innovative elements.

Development Update and Speculation

In a 2024 interview with Famitsu, Sakaguchi confirmed the project's progress, estimating approximately two more years until completion. A trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" by Mistwalker in June 2024 has sparked fan speculation regarding a potential sequel, although this remains unconfirmed. The new game is expected to maintain the fantasy RPG style characteristic of Sakaguchi's previous works.

Reunion with Square Enix

The collaboration with Square Enix for the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension marked a significant return for Sakaguchi. He expressed the "fascinating experience" of completing the circle, having started his career at Square (now Square Enix). Despite this reunion, Sakaguchi maintains his disinterest in revisiting the Final Fantasy franchise or his past works, preferring the perspective of a player rather than a developer.
