Mario Kart World, an eagerly awaited Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, is set to launch alongside the new console on June 5. This open-world racing game introduces players to a vast Mushroom Kingdom, where they can explore freely with a variety of characters and vehicles. Preorders for Mario Kart World are now open at multiple retailers, including Walmart. Let's dive in for a closer look.
Mario Kart World
Unlike many games that come in various editions, Mario Kart World is available in a single version. You can purchase it standalone for $79.99 or opt for the bundle with the Switch 2 console for $499.99.
Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle
Choosing the Switch 2 bundle with Mario Kart World saves you $30 compared to buying the console and game separately. Keep in mind, the bundle includes a digital copy of the game, so you won't receive a physical cart or game box. If having a physical copy is essential to you and worth the extra $30, feel free to proceed with your preorder.
When purchased on its own, Mario Kart World retails for $79.99, which is $10 more than the standard price for AAA PlayStation and Xbox games this generation. While I'm not thrilled about price increases between console generations, I understand the rising costs of game development. Hopefully, this price reflects the expansive nature of Mario Kart World, making it a worthwhile investment.
Mario Kart World aims to be the most ambitious Mario Kart game to date. It features an expansive open world, drawing inspiration from the Forza Horizon series. In Grand Prix mode, you can seamlessly transition from one race track to another without interruption.
The game's dynamic environment, affected by weather and time of day, adds a layer of realism that impacts visibility and traction during races. Players have the freedom to leave the track and explore "virtually everywhere" within the Mushroom Kingdom, as stated by Nintendo. Each race accommodates up to 24 drivers, surpassing the participant count of any previous Mario Kart title.
A new mode, Knockout Tour, challenges players to race across the open world, passing through checkpoints with designated placements. Falling behind the required position at any checkpoint results in elimination from the race.
For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, Free Roam mode allows players to explore the world at their own pace, either solo or with friends, and even capture memorable moments with in-game photography.
More details about Mario Kart World will be revealed during the Nintendo Direct on April 17. In the meantime, check out our hands-on preview for additional insights.
