Exciting news for boxing and gaming enthusiasts alike: Takashi Nishiyama, the renowned creator of Street Fighter, is venturing into the world of boxing games. In a thrilling collaboration announced by Turki Alalshikh, the Chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, Nishiyama's company Dimps is teaming up with the prestigious boxing magazine The Ring. Alalshikh, who acquired The Ring in November 2024, shared this development on his official X account, sparking widespread interest.
The untitled game promises to feature original characters and blend "The Ring's unmatched authority in boxing with Dimps' decades-long experience in crafting classic games." This strategic partnership aims to deliver a boxing game that leverages the deep knowledge of boxing from The Ring and the innovative game design prowess of Dimps, which recently released Freedom Wars Remastered in January 2025. Development is set to begin soon, raising anticipation among fans.
The involvement of the Saudi Arabian royal family in Japan's gaming industry is notable, with significant investments including the full acquisition of Japanese game company SNK by the Saudi Crown Prince's foundation in April 2024. The Ring has also played a role in promoting SNK's upcoming Fatal Fury: City of Wolves, which included a boxing match collaboration at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on April 26, 2025. Nishiyama's historical ties with SNK, where he developed the Fatal Fury series and contributed to iconic series like Metal Slug and King of Fighters, further enrich this collaboration.
The announcement has sparked a range of reactions from Japanese audiences. From surprised exclamations like "What?!! I want to play it!" to a curious anticipation of the final product, there's a palpable buzz. X user @ryo_redcyclone, known for Street Fighter content, highlighted Nishiyama's past comments on focusing on street fighting due to the restrictive nature of established sports. He expressed curiosity about how Nishiyama would approach a game centered on boxing, a sport governed by strict rules.
Concerns linger about whether the structured rules of boxing might limit Nishiyama's creativity, especially considering the eccentric characters and unconventional moves seen in his previous works. For instance, Street Fighter's character Balrog, a Mike Tyson lookalike, uses moves like kicks and the Buffalo Head, which clearly breach boxing regulations. It remains to be seen whether The Ring and Dimps' new boxing game will prioritize realism or embrace the rule-breaking flair of Nishiyama's past creations.
