Unlock the power of your vehicle's diagnostics with Piston, where all your car's diagnostic information is easily accessible right from your mobile device. If your Check Engine Light (MIL) is on, Piston transforms your smartphone into an effective car scanner, enabling you to read Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) associated with the issue, as well as the crucial Freeze Frame data. This functionality empowers you to diagnose and resolve problems efficiently.

To get started, you'll need an ELM327 based adapter, which can be either Bluetooth or WiFi enabled, and connect it to your vehicle's OBD2 socket. Piston offers a user-friendly guide to walk you through the connection process, accessible from the Home page after your initial setup or at any time from the Settings menu.

With Piston, you can:

Read and clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) as defined by the OBD2 standard
View Freeze Frame data, which provides a snapshot of sensor data at the moment the ECU detects a malfunction
Access real-time data from your vehicle's sensors
Check the status of Readiness Monitors, which track the performance of emission control devices
Save the DTCs you've read in a local history for future reference
Log in and store your DTCs in the cloud for easy access across devices
View charts of sensor readouts for a visual analysis of your vehicle's performance

Some of these features are classified as Premium and can be unlocked with a one-time in-app purchase, ensuring you have access to all functionalities without any recurring subscriptions.

Please note that to use Piston as a car scanner, you will need a separate ELM327 based device, which supports both Bluetooth and WiFi connections. Piston is fully compatible with the OBD-II (also known as OBDII or OBD2) and EOBD standards, ensuring broad applicability across various vehicle types.

In the United States, all vehicles sold since 1996 are required to support the OBD2 standard. In the European Union, EOBD has been mandatory for petrol vehicles since 2001 and for diesel vehicles since 2004. For Australia and New Zealand, OBD2 is required for all petrol cars manufactured from 2006 and diesel cars from 2007.

It's important to remember that Piston can only access the data your vehicle supports and provides via the OBD2 standard.
