Cyberpunk 2077's sequel, codenamed Project Orion, is set to broaden the horizons of the original game by introducing a second city alongside Night City. At Digital Dragons 2025 on May 20, R. Talsorian Games founder and game designer Mike Pondsmith provided insights into the upcoming sequel.

Although Pondsmith's involvement in the new game is less extensive than with Cyberpunk 2077, he remains engaged with its development. "I see the scripts. Last week I was wandering around talking to different departments and seeing what they had like, ‘this is the new Cyberware, what do you think?’" he shared.

Pondsmith also disclosed that the new city aims to evoke a distinct atmosphere. "I remember looking at it and going, ‘I understand the feel that you’re going for, and this really does work, it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong’. And I said, ‘yeah, I can see this working’," he remarked.

CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has been actively recruiting for Cyberpunk 2, with recent job listings for roles such as the Lead Encounter Designer. This position involves "help[ing] formulate solutions for and help[ing] create memorable gameplay encounters that will thrill and excite our players."

The job description hints at groundbreaking features, with one responsibility being to "Work in close collaboration with the systems design team to create the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date."

While details on Project Orion remain sparse, the insights from Pondsmith and CDPR's recruitment efforts suggest that Cyberpunk 2 will expand on its predecessor's renowned world-building and storytelling.

In other developments, CDPR has released new footage showcasing the optimization efforts for Cyberpunk 2077 on the Nintendo Switch 2. The studio has uploaded approximately 37 minutes of B-roll videos on their website, demonstrating the game's performance on Nintendo's upcoming console.

During showcase events in New York and Paris earlier this year, reports highlighted performance issues with Cyberpunk 2077 on the Switch 2, particularly frame drops. Business Insider noted, "Such an intensive game playing on the Switch 2 is a fun novelty, but this definitely isn't the best way to play CyberPunk. I encountered lots of frame drops."

However, CDPR Engineer Tim Green expressed satisfaction with the port's progress in an interview with Game File on April 25. "We haven’t had to fight with fitting into memory, and the speed of the data storage has helped alleviate some of those early streaming problems. This has allowed us to focus our attention on improving other things, and we’re very happy with the result," he stated.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is scheduled for release on the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025.
