Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 Devs Won’t Say Whether They’ll Ban Elon Musk for Account Boosting

Elon Musk's alleged cheating in Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 has sparked controversy, with fans questioning the integrity of the games and the developers' response. Screenshots of a private conversation revealed Musk admitted to paying for account boosting, a violation of both games' terms of service.

Account boosting, where players pay others to level up their accounts, is a form of cheating widely prohibited in online games. Blizzard's EULA explicitly forbids this practice. Following the revelation, both Blizzard and Grinding Gear Games (developers of Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 respectively) refused to comment on whether they would ban Musk's accounts, leading to significant backlash from players.

Forum posts on both Battle.net and the Path of Exile official forums express outrage, questioning the fairness of the game and the apparent lack of consequences for a high-profile individual. Players argue that the lack of action undermines the integrity of the game's competitive aspects and the enforcement of its rules against real-money trading (RMT).

Both Blizzard and Grinding Gear Games declined to comment on individual player accounts or enforcement actions. Musk, who previously boasted about his gaming skills and high rankings, claimed account boosting was necessary to compete with Asian players. He also clarified that while he streams gameplay, he doesn't claim credit for boosted accounts.

Musk's claims were further challenged when his Path of Exile 2 character showed activity while he was in Washington D.C. for a political event. The musician Grimes, Musk's former partner, defended him, claiming to have witnessed his gaming prowess firsthand. However, the controversy continues, raising serious questions about fairness and accountability in online gaming.
