Valve's Mysterious MOBA Shooter, Deadlock, Officially Launches on Steam
After a period of secrecy, Valve's highly anticipated MOBA shooter, Deadlock, has finally arrived on Steam. This article explores the game's recent beta success, its unique gameplay mechanics, and the controversy surrounding Valve's approach to its own store guidelines.
The recent Steam page launch marks a significant shift in Valve's communication strategy. Following a closed beta that peaked at an impressive 89,203 concurrent players (more than double the previous peak), Valve has officially opened public discussion of Deadlock. Streaming and community engagement are now permitted, although the game remains invite-only and in early access. This move signals a change from the initial secrecy surrounding the project.
Deadlock delivers a fast-paced, 6v6 experience blending MOBA and shooter elements. Players command both human heroes and squads of AI-controlled units ("Troopers") across multiple lanes, creating a dynamic battlefield. Frequent Trooper respawns, wave-based combat, and strategic use of abilities are core gameplay features. The game boasts a roster of 20 unique heroes and diverse movement options, including sliding, dashing, and zip-lining.
Interestingly, Deadlock's Steam page currently deviates from Valve's own store guidelines. While the platform usually requires at least five screenshots, Deadlock's page features only a single teaser video. This has sparked debate, with some criticizing Valve for seemingly applying different standards to its own games. This isn't the first time Valve has faced criticism regarding its Steam store practices. This inconsistency raises questions about fairness and consistency on the platform. However, Valve's unique dual role as both developer and platform owner complicates the application of traditional enforcement.
As Deadlock progresses through its development and testing phases, it will be interesting to see how Valve addresses these concerns and whether the game lives up to its significant hype. The innovative gameplay and the unusual circumstances surrounding its launch make Deadlock a fascinating case study in game development and platform management.
