Nintendo Switch 2 VRR Exclusive to Handheld Mode

Author:Kristen Update:May 25,2025

Back in early April, enthusiasts of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing after spotting mentions of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, which were quickly removed. Nintendo has now provided clarity on the VRR functionality for the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial information about VRR was incorrect: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error."

Regarding potential future support for VRR in docked mode, Nintendo indicated they have "nothing to announce on this topic." This means that, currently, users connecting their new console to a TV will not benefit from VRR.

The clarification comes after initial confusion when the VRR mention appeared and then was systematically removed from various sites, as documented by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.

While this news might disappoint those hoping for VRR on the Switch 2's TV settings at launch, there's still hope. Sony, for instance, introduced VRR support to PS5 consoles via a post-launch update, suggesting a similar possibility for the Switch 2 in the future.

In other Nintendo Switch 2 developments, the company has announced a list of games set to receive free performance upgrades on the new system, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has assured that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand "through the holidays."
