Pocketpair's CEO, Takuro Mizobe, recently spoke with ASCII Japan about Palworld's future, specifically addressing the possibility of transitioning the game to a live service model. While no firm decisions have been made, Mizobe acknowledged the ongoing consideration of two distinct paths.
Mizobe confirmed that Palworld will receive updates, including a new map, Pals, and raid bosses. However, the long-term vision involves a choice between completing Palworld as a "packaged" buy-to-play (B2P) title or adopting a live service model (LiveOps). He explained the inherent business advantages of a live service approach, highlighting increased profit potential and extended game lifespan. However, he also emphasized the significant challenges, primarily due to Palworld's initial design not being geared towards this model.
A key consideration is player preference. Mizobe pointed out the typical trajectory of live service games, often starting as free-to-play (F2P) before incorporating paid content. Palworld's B2P structure complicates this transition, requiring careful consideration of the potential impact on the existing player base. He cited successful F2P transitions like PUBG and Fall Guys, but noted the considerable time and effort involved in such a transformation.
Mizobe also discussed alternative monetization strategies, such as ad integration. However, he dismissed this option for Palworld due to its likely negative reception among the PC gaming community, citing the generally negative player reaction to in-game advertising.
Currently, Pocketpair is focused on increasing player engagement and retention while exploring the best path forward for Palworld. With the recent Sakurajima update and the introduction of PvP, the game is still in its early access phase, and the final decision on its long-term model remains under careful consideration.
