Avowed's Success Spurs Talk of Expansions and Sequels

Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with sales figures. This positive reception has fueled speculation about future projects within the franchise. In a recent Bloomberg interview (February 22, 2025), Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel hinted at the possibility of expansions or a sequel.

While no official plans have been announced, Patel expressed a strong desire to continue working within the established world. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it." This suggests a strong internal interest in extending the Avowed narrative and gameplay.

The Challenging Development Journey of Avowed

Patel also discussed the complex development process of Avowed, highlighting the numerous challenges and changes encountered along the way. The project, initiated in 2018, faced hurdles related to Obsidian's impending sale and subsequent acquisition by Microsoft in 2020. Several features, including multiplayer functionality, were ultimately cut. A leadership change and game reboot in January 2021 further complicated the process.

Patel described managing a team of over 80 individuals as particularly demanding. She noted the inherent messiness of large-scale game development, emphasizing that despite initial chaos, the project eventually coalesced into a successful product. Key changes included a refocus on the Pillars of Eternity lore and a shift from a fully open world to open zones, allowing for greater refinement of individual areas.

Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?

The renewed success of the Pillars of Eternity franchise, thanks to Avowed, has sparked interest in a new spin-off. In a Twitch livestream (February 23, 2025), Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer revealed Obsidian's interest in developing a tactics game for the franchise.

Sawyer acknowledged the considerable demand for a Pillars of Eternity Tactics title, both internally and among fans. However, he highlighted the challenges of determining the appropriate scope, visual fidelity, and overall scale of such a project. While a Pillars of Eternity 3 is also on Sawyer's radar, he envisions a significantly larger budget, comparable to Baldur's Gate 3's $100 million investment.

Avowed is available now on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
