Bloodborne Fans Celebrate 10th Anniversary, Rally for Return to Yharnam Amid No Sequel or Update

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 28,2025

Today marks a special milestone for fans of FromSoftware's iconic PlayStation 4 title, Bloodborne, as it celebrates its 10th anniversary. Enthusiasts worldwide are coming together for the "Return to Yharnam" community event, a testament to the game's enduring legacy and the fervent dedication of its community.

Launched on March 24, 2015, Bloodborne not only solidified FromSoftware's reputation as a leading developer but also garnered widespread critical and commercial success. The game's unique atmosphere and challenging gameplay left fans eagerly anticipating a follow-up, be it a sequel, a current-gen remaster, or at least a next-gen update to bring it to 60fps. Yet, a decade later, Sony has remained silent on any plans for further development, leaving the community puzzled and frustrated.

Earlier this year, Shuhei Yoshida, a PlayStation legend who has since left Sony, offered his perspective on the lack of Bloodborne updates. Speaking to Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida clarified that his comments were purely his personal theory and not based on any inside information. He suggested that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of Bloodborne and head of FromSoftware, might be hesitant to allow anyone else to work on the game, given his deep personal attachment to it and his busy schedule managing multiple successful projects.

Miyazaki's career trajectory post-Bloodborne has been nothing short of impressive. He directed Dark Souls 3, followed by Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for Activision, and the critically acclaimed Elden Ring for Bandai Namco, which has since spawned a multiplayer spin-off. Despite frequent inquiries about Bloodborne, Miyazaki has often redirected attention, citing that FromSoftware does not own the IP. However, he did acknowledge last year that the game could benefit from being updated for modern hardware.

In the absence of official updates, fans and modders have taken matters into their own hands. Notable efforts include a 60fps mod by Lance McDonald, which was unfortunately hit with a DMCA takedown from Sony, and projects like Lilith Walther's Nightmare Kart and the Bloodborne PSX demake, which also faced copyright challenges. Meanwhile, technological advancements in PS4 emulation, such as the breakthrough with ShadPS4 highlighted by Digital Foundry, have allowed fans to experience Bloodborne in 60fps on PC, though this has seemingly prompted a more aggressive stance from Sony.

As official updates remain elusive, the Bloodborne community continues to thrive through grassroots efforts like the "Return to Yharnam" event. Today, on the game's 10th anniversary, fans are encouraged to start fresh characters, engage with as many co-operators and invaders as possible, and leave in-game messages to signify their participation in this community-driven celebration.
