GTA 6 Delay: Rockstar's History of Postponements Continues

Author:Kristen Update:Jun 01,2025

Taking a moment to breathe can be helpful, especially when it comes to understanding why delays are often a good thing—not just in life, but in the world of gaming. While not every delay leads to perfection, more often than not, giving developers the time they need results in something truly special. Think about how many times you've wished a publisher would push back a release date to ensure quality over speed. Keep that thought tucked away—it'll make the upcoming discussion clearer.

GTA 6 is delayed, and that’s a good thing because it likely means the final product will be better for it.

PlayRockstar has built a reputation for holding off on releases until they’re confident the game is ready—a discipline that places them in elite company, alongside Nintendo, who similarly prioritize quality over haste. And just like with their other titles, the results are consistently impressive.

From the moment GTA III graced our screens, I’ve been hooked. Starting with LAN parties on PC, I’ve explored every corner of these chaotic worlds, from the obscure (London 1969) to the iconic (GTA V). Decades of carnage and chaos later, one thing remains constant: these games are almost always late, and almost always great. Let’s take a look at each major GTA title and its respective delays.

Grand Theft Auto III

Rockstar’s offices in New York were close to the World Trade Center, making the events of September 11 particularly impactful. Following the tragedy, Rockstar delayed GTA III to give themselves time to review content and ensure it remained appropriate. Marketing VP Terry Donovan explained:

"Our decision is based on two factors: first, communication infrastructure in downtown Manhattan was unreliable in the aftermath; second, we needed to thoroughly review our titles and marketing materials. As for GTA III, while the review process isn’t quick, we’ve already identified some contextual references we no longer felt comfortable with, along with rare gameplay instances that didn’t align with current sensibilities. Rest assured, the game will be phenomenal—and you can expect it to launch in late October.”

This delay proved wise, as releasing a game so soon after such tragic events would have been tone-deaf. Instead, Rockstar took the time to make necessary adjustments, ensuring the game was respectful while maintaining its charm.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

In the early days of physical disc manufacturing, predicting demand was tricky. For Vice City, Rockstar delayed the release by seven days to meet the overwhelming initial demand. Similarly, San Andreas for PS2 arrived a week later than planned to allow extra polishing time for its two-year development cycle.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Vice City Stories saw a two-week delay in North America, with longer waits in parts of Europe. Meanwhile, Chinatown Wars, widely regarded as one of the greatest portable GTA games, launched two months later than expected. Although its delayed arrival didn’t stop it from blowing critics away, it remains a missed opportunity for wider recognition.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Anticipation for GTA IV reached fever pitch after the success of GTA III. Rockstar Leeds aimed to deliver a next-gen masterpiece, but achieving their vision required additional time. As Sam Hause put it:

“The new consoles [PS3 and 360] let us create the GTA game we’ve always imagined. Every aspect of the game has been transformed. We’re pushing hardware limits, and top engineers from Sony and Microsoft are helping us maximize performance. Our goal? To exceed fan expectations and deliver the ultimate HD experience.”

Grand Theft Auto V

Originally slated for spring 2013, GTA V was delayed until September due to its massive scope and complexity. Rockstar’s statement read:

“This delay will disappoint many, but trust us—it’ll be worth it. GTAV is ambitious and requires extra polish to meet our standards and yours. Thank you for your support and patience.”

And they were right. GTA V became the most successful console game ever, cementing Rockstar’s legacy.

Red Dead Redemption 2

RDR2 wasn’t part of the GTA series, but it followed the same principles. First delayed in spring 2017, then again in February 2018, the game finally released in late October. Rockstar explained:

“We need a little extra time for polish. Please know we’re grateful for your patience. The wait will be worth it.”

True to form, RDR2 delivered a masterpiece that remains unmatched in gaming.

Conclusion

So, don’t fret over GTA 6’s delay. History shows us that waiting pays off. When it arrives in May 2026, it will likely be worth the wait. Until then, keep calm and carry on. Vice City awaits.
