While the gaming world explores generative AI's potential, Nintendo maintains a cautious stance, prioritizing its unique development approach and IP protection.

This decision stems primarily from concerns regarding intellectual property rights. Furukawa discussed the evolving relationship between AI and game development.
He acknowledged AI's longstanding role in game development, particularly in NPC behavior control. However, the current focus is on generative AI, capable of creating diverse content like text, images, and video through pattern recognition.
Generative AI's rise across industries is undeniable. "AI-like technologies have long aided in controlling enemy movements," Furukawa explained, highlighting the historical connection between AI and game development.
Despite recognizing generative AI's creative potential, Furukawa highlighted the IP rights challenges. "Generative AI can boost creativity, but IP rights issues are a significant concern," he stated, referencing the potential for copyright infringement inherent in such tools.
Furukawa underscored Nintendo's decades-long commitment to crafting unique gaming experiences. "Our decades of expertise ensure optimal game experiences," he stated. "While adaptable to technological advancements, we aim to deliver uniquely Nintendo value, something technology alone cannot replicate."
This position contrasts with other gaming giants. Ubisoft's Project Neural Nexus NEO NPCs, for example, leverage generative AI for in-game conversations. Producer Xavier Manzanares emphasized AI's role as a tool, stating, "GenAI is technology, not a game creator; it requires design and a dedicated team."
Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu views generative AI as a content creation opportunity, while Electronic Arts (EA) CEO Andrew Wilson anticipates generative AI enhancing over half of EA's development processes.
