SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Giants: A Fight for AI Protections and Fair Compensation

SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, has launched a strike against major video game companies, including Activision and Electronic Arts, highlighting concerns over AI usage and fair compensation. This action follows over a year of stalled negotiations.

SAG-AFTRA Strike Announcement

The core issue revolves around the unregulated use of artificial intelligence in the industry. While not opposed to AI technology itself, SAG-AFTRA members are worried about potential job displacement due to AI-generated voice replication and digital likenesses created without consent. The union also fears AI could usurp smaller roles, hindering career progression for less experienced actors. Ethical concerns also arise regarding AI-generated content potentially contradicting actors' values.

SAG-AFTRA's Proposed Solutions

To address these concerns and other issues, SAG-AFTRA has introduced new agreements. The Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA) caters to smaller-budget projects ($250,000 - $30 million), offering a tiered system based on budget size. This agreement, finalized in February, includes AI protections previously rejected by the video game industry bargaining group. A key development was a January side deal with Replica Studios, enabling union actors to license digital voice replicas under specific, opt-out conditions.

Interim Agreements

Further temporary solutions are provided through the Interim Interactive Media Agreement and the Interim Interactive Localization Agreement. These agreements address critical aspects including: right of rescission, compensation, AI/digital modeling guidelines, rest periods, meal periods, payment timelines, health and retirement benefits, casting procedures, and more. Importantly, these interim agreements exclude expansion packs and DLC, and projects under these agreements are exempt from the strike.

Negotiation Timeline

Negotiations, initiated in October 2022, culminated in a 98.32% strike authorization vote by SAG-AFTRA members on September 24, 2023. The primary obstacle remains the employers' unwillingness to guarantee strong, enforceable AI protections. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher stated the union will not accept contracts enabling AI abuse, while Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator, highlighted the industry's substantial profits and the vital role of SAG-AFTRA members. Sarah Elmaleh, Chair of the Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee, emphasized the union's dedication to fair AI practices.

SAG-AFTRA's Resolve

Grev, SAG-AFTRA'nın gelişen video oyunu endüstrisinde üyelerine adil muamele ve koruma sağlama konusundaki kararlılığının altını çiziyor. Bu görüşmelerin sonucu, yapay zekanın video oyunu prodüksiyonu ve oyuncu tazminatı alanındaki rolünün geleceğini önemli ölçüde etkileyecek.
