Creator of Bloodborne 60fps Patch Says Sony Has Sent Him a DMCA Takedown — but Why Now?

Lance McDonald, the creator of the popular Bloodborne 60fps patch, has reported receiving a DMCA takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment. The notice demanded the removal of links to the patch, which McDonald has complied with. He highlighted the irony, recalling a humorous encounter with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida where he revealed his work on the mod. Yoshida reportedly laughed at the revelation.

Bloodborne's continued absence from next-gen platforms remains a significant point of contention among fans. Despite its critical acclaim and commercial success, Sony has yet to release an official 60fps patch, remaster, or sequel, leaving a void filled by community efforts like McDonald's mod. Recent advancements in PS4 emulation, highlighted by Digital Foundry's coverage of ShadPS4, now allow for a near-remaster experience with 60fps performance on PC. This development may have contributed to Sony's more assertive response. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.

Shuhei Yoshida recently offered his perspective on Bloodborne's inactivity in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. He theorized that Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep personal attachment to the game, coupled with his busy schedule, prevents him from overseeing a remaster or update, and that Sony respects his wishes. Yoshida stressed this was merely a theory, not a disclosure of confidential information.

Despite Bloodborne's dormancy nearing a decade, a glimmer of hope remains. While Miyazaki often deflects questions regarding the game's future, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that a release on modern hardware would be beneficial.
