Pokémon TCG Pocket Launches, Sparking Controversy

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 11,2025

Pokémon TCG Pocket's highly anticipated trading update has arrived, but instead of celebration, it's met with widespread player outrage. The trading system, criticized last week for its restrictions, has launched to an even more negative reception due to unexpectedly stringent requirements.

Social media is ablaze with player frustration. The primary complaint centers around the excessive resource demands for trading. Unlike other in-game mechanics like Wonder Pick, trading necessitates two distinct consumable items: Trade Stamina and Trade Tokens.

Trade Stamina, replenishing over time or purchasable with Poké Gold (real money), is one requirement. The other, and far more controversial, is Trade Tokens. These tokens are essential for trading any card with a rarity of 3 Diamonds or higher. The token costs are steep: 120 for a 3-Diamond card, 400 for a 1-Star card, and a staggering 500 for a 4-Diamond (ex Pokémon) card.

The acquisition of Trade Tokens is equally problematic. They are obtained solely by discarding cards from a player's collection. The exchange rates are heavily weighted against the player, requiring the sacrifice of multiple high-rarity cards to trade even a single one of similar or lower rarity. For instance, five ex Pokémon must be sold to trade one, and selling a Crown rarity card (the rarest in the game) only yields enough tokens for three ex Pokémon trades.

The community's reaction has been overwhelmingly negative. Reddit posts describe the update as an "insult," a "monumental failure," and "hilariously toxic," with many players vowing to cease spending money on the game. The lengthy process of selling cards for tokens, approximately 15 seconds per transaction, further exacerbates the frustration. Many players believe the system is deliberately designed to stifle trading and maximize revenue.

The high cost of acquiring high-rarity cards, often requiring significant real-world spending, is another point of contention. Players highlight the predatory nature of the system, arguing that if trading were easily accessible, players wouldn't need to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on booster packs.

Creatures Inc. remains silent on the backlash, a departure from their previous response to initial concerns. While they previously stated they would monitor player feedback, the current situation suggests their assurances fell far short of reality. IGN has reached out to Creatures Inc. for comment, but no response has been received.

Potential improvements, suggested by players, include adding Trade Tokens as rewards for completing in-game missions. However, given the current design, it's more likely that Trade Stamina will continue to be rewarded, mirroring the existing reward system for similar resources. The launch of this poorly-received update casts a shadow over the upcoming release of Diamond and Pearl Pokémon, Dialga and Palkia, into the game.
