Ubisoft Revives Splinter Cell with New Steam Achievements for 12-Year-Old Game

Good news for fans of Sam Fisher: Ubisoft has not forgotten about the iconic Splinter Cell series. In a recent update, the developer added Steam Achievements to the 2013 release, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, marking a subtle but significant nod to the franchise's enduring appeal.

While the last substantial update on the Splinter Cell Remake was in 2022, when IGN met with Ubisoft Toronto developers to discuss their design philosophy, the developer recently updated the achievement list for the 12-year-old Blacklist on Steam.

Ubisoft announced: "Agents, we are pleased to announce that Steam Achievements are now available for Splinter Cell: Blacklist!"

PlayThe achievements can be "retroactively earned for the accomplishments already completed in your game," but you'll need to launch the game at least once to sync them. "Once synced, the previously unlocked Ubisoft Connect achievements will be automatically unlocked on Steam," the team explained.

In addition to adding these retroactive achievements, Ubisoft decided not to include the 19 online achievements available on consoles, ensuring players can still achieve 100% completion on Steam.

The stealth-action series is set to make a comeback with the Splinter Cell Remake, a ground-up rebuild using the advanced Snowdrop engine. While details remain scarce, creative director Chris Auty shared insights in 2022, stating, "20 years later, we can look back at the plot, the characters, the overall story of the game [and] make some improvements — things that might not have aged particularly well. But the core of the story, the core of the experience will remain as it was in the original game."

In other Ubisoft news, the company recently established a subsidiary focused on its Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six brands, backed by a €1.16 billion (approx. $1.25 billion) investment from Tencent. This move follows the announcement that Assassin's Creed Shadows has surpassed 3 million players. Ubisoft has faced challenges with high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations leading up to Shadows' release, putting immense pressure on the game to succeed amid the company's historically low share price.
