MindsEye CEO on Disastrous IOI Launch

Author:Kristen Update:Aug 01,2026

Describing MindsEye's launch as rocky would be a significant understatement. The release was marred by scathing reviews, widespread refunds for players, and subsequent staff layoffs, generating plenty of negative press for developer Build a Rocket Boy's debut title.

However, there was a time when MindsEye generated genuine excitement, enough for IOI Partners—the publishing division of Hitman and 007 First Light studio IO Interactive—to see sufficient potential and agree to distribute the game.

"Our initial discussions with the team were about offering support," Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive, explained to IGN. "We believed they had compelling ideas and an intriguing world in development, and we hoped they would eventually showcase more of it. Our goal was simply to assist with the game's distribution."

Somewhere along the line, though, MindsEye's development clearly veered off course, culminating in its troubled launch. For IOI Partners, this outcome was certainly not what they had envisioned when they aligned with the Leslie Benzies-led project.

"It was undoubtedly a difficult situation," Abrak acknowledged. "The reception was harsh. It fell short of their expectations, and ours as well at IOI Partners. They are now working diligently to regain players' trust and have substantial content in the pipeline. We hope they succeed in turning things around."

Shortly after the launch, Build a Rocket Boy expressed being 'heartbroken' over the issues players encountered and pledged a series of updates to address major performance problems, glitches, and flawed AI behavior. Implementation of these patches has already started.

MindsEye, a story-driven action-adventure game, was originally conceived as part of Everywhere—a 'Roblox for adults' creation platform led by former Grand Theft Auto design chief Leslie Benzies. BARB later shifted its focus entirely to MindsEye, but the game has so far struggled to achieve commercial success.

In July, BARB insiders informed IGN that Benzies addressed the team post-launch in a brief video call. According to two anonymous sources, Benzies asserted that the studio would recover and relaunch MindsEye, attributing the game's difficulties to both internal and external sabotage, among other factors.

The future of both MindsEye and Build a Rocket Boy remains unclear. As for IOI Partners, will it continue publishing games developed outside the Danish studio? While IO Interactive will self-publish the upcoming James Bond adventure, 007 First Light, the question remains whether the MindsEye experience has affected their appetite for external partnerships.

"IO Interactive will handle our own internal publishing," Abrak stated. "As for IOI Partners? That’s still undecided."
