Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yotei promises unmatched exploration and vast landscapes, surpassing all previous studio projects. Discover what awaits in this sequel and its portrayal of Japanese heritage.

In a recent Famitsu interview on April 24, Sucker Punch developers shared exciting details about Ghost of Yotei, the standalone follow-up to the acclaimed PlayStation exclusive Ghost of Tsushima. This sequel enhances gameplay and narrative depth with new layers of immersion.
Creative Director Jason Cornell revealed that the game offers the studio’s most expansive maps and unparalleled player freedom. He noted that players can independently track down the Yotei Six, pursuing vengeance without a rigid, linear path.
Last week, Sucker Punch announced the PS5 release date for Ghost of Yotei, accompanied by a trailer titled "The Onryō’s List." The trailer revealed glimpses of the story and gameplay, introducing protagonist Atsu and her quest to avenge her family against the Yotei Six.

Beyond open-world exploration, players will enjoy greater weapon variety. The latest trailer hinted at an expanded arsenal for Atsu, which Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed in the interview. Alongside the iconic samurai sword, players can wield an odachi, chain sickle, dual swords, and spear.
Fox emphasized that while the sword remains central, additional weapons can be mastered through encounters with teachers and masters across the open world.

Unlike its predecessor, where samurai honor shaped the narrative, Atsu’s non-samurai status allows a freer fighting style. She can pick up and use dropped enemy weapons, such as throwing them at foes, though this is limited to specific weapons. Fox clarified, "Not every weapon or enemy is usable, but if it’s within reach, Atsu can wield it effectively."

Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), Ghost of Yotei blends a lawless frontier with the perilous beauty of nature, as described by Cornell.
The game showcases Ainu culture, an indigenous group from Japan’s northern regions. Sucker Punch visited Hokkaido, consulting museums and Ainu culture experts to ensure authenticity. Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido’s breathtaking landscapes, aiming to bring this vivid setting to players worldwide.

Ghost of Tsushima earned praise from Japanese critics for its authentic portrayal of culture and history. Sucker Punch aims to maintain this standard in Ghost of Yotei, capturing the "hidden dangers within Ezo’s stunning wilderness."
Ghost of Yotei launches October 2, 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5. Stay updated with the latest game details in our article below!
