Civilization 7 has hit the market, and despite receiving a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, remains optimistic that the game's dedicated fanbase will eventually embrace it. The latest installment from Firaxis, a 4X strategy sequel, is currently accessible to those who opt for advanced access, typically the more hardcore fans of the Civilization series. These fans have been vocal in their Steam reviews, pointing out concerns such as issues with the user interface, a lack of map variety, and the absence of several features that are staples of the series.

In response to this feedback, Firaxis has committed to enhancing the UI, introducing team-based multiplayer options for cooperative play, and expanding the variety of map types, among other planned updates.

During an interview with IGN prior to the release of third quarter financial results, Zelnick acknowledged the mixed reception, including a notably low 2/5 review from Eurogamer. However, he emphasized the game's strong performance on Metacritic, with an average score of 81 and over 20 reviews scoring above 90. Zelnick expressed confidence that the "legacy Civ audience" would grow to appreciate the game as they spend more time with it, suggesting that initial apprehension often gives way to enthusiasm in the Civilization series.

Zelnick noted specific areas for improvement, particularly the user interface, and reassured that the team is actively addressing these concerns. He described the early access release as "very encouraging" and highlighted the innovative changes introduced in Civilization 7, such as the new Age system. This system involves players progressing through three Ages—Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern—each culminating in an Age Transition where players select a new civilization, retain certain Legacies, and witness the evolution of the game world. This is a departure from previous Civilization games, and Zelnick believes it will be a feature that fans will come to love.

In the immediate future, Firaxis faces the challenge of improving sentiment on Steam, where user reviews play a critical role in a game's visibility and overall success on the platform. A positive shift in user reviews could significantly enhance the game's reception and performance on Valve's marketplace.
