Warner Bros. Discovery Drops HBO Max Rebrand

Author:Kristen Update:Oct 07,2025

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced Max will revert to its former HBO Max branding starting this summer.

This unexpected rebrand comes just two years after HBO Max transitioned to simply "Max." The soon-to-be-renamed HBO Max streaming platform houses premium content including Game of Thrones, The White Lotus, The Sopranos, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, and the upcoming The Penguin.

WBD revealed its streaming operations have achieved nearly $3 billion in profit improvement over two years while expanding globally with 22 million new subscribers in the past year alone. The company projects surpassing 150 million subscribers by 2026's end.

"This success stems from strategic refocusing on high-performing content categories like HBO originals, recent theatrical releases, docuseries, select reality programming, and localized originals, while reducing emphasis on less engaging genres," the company stated.

The return to HBO Max branding reflects consumer associations between HBO and premium, must-watch content - a critical differentiator in today's oversaturated streaming landscape.

"Current market research shows viewers prioritize quality over quantity. While competitors flood the market with volume, WBD's strength lies in curated excellence - a standard HBO has maintained for over fifty years," WBD explained.

"Reinstating HBO into our streaming identity reinforces our unique value proposition and demonstrates our commitment to strategic evolution guided by data-driven consumer insights."

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav commented: "Our streaming growth stems from programming excellence. Restoring HBO - the gold standard in entertainment - to our platform name will accelerate this momentum."

Streaming President JB Perrette added: "We'll maintain our distinct positioning - not trying to be all things to all viewers, but delivering exceptional content tailored for adults and families. Our programming stands apart - that's not opinion, it's fact."

HBO/Max Content Chairman Casey Bloys stated: "Our current trajectory makes HBO Max the ideal brand representation. It reaffirms our commitment to delivering uniquely compelling content that justifies premium pricing - the hallmark principle that defined HBO."
